What SPF should you be using when applying sun protection cream?

With summer shortly upon us, chances are you are planning on spending plenty of time outside.

This is a simple guide to help you gain a better understanding on the importance of SPF and which one you should be using to keep your skin protected this summer.

We all know the importance of applying sun cream before going out. But which SPF is best suited to you to use when applying sun cream?

The Importance of SPF

SPF stands for sun protection factor.

In sunscreen products, the SPF factor helps to block your skin from the sun's UVA and UVB radiation rays.

When buying a sun cream, you want to ensure it's a broad spectrum version. This means it protects you against both types of sun UV's rays.

SPF is designed to extend your skin's natural defences against the sun's radiation. If a sun cream had an SPF of 30, this means it provides 30 times more protection to your skin then without the sun cream.

The SPF scale ranges from 2-50+, the higher the SPF value the better the protection.

Both rays combined are deadly to the skin, however UVB rays are more responsible for sun burns.

Low SPF vs High SPF

It's recommend using sun scream with an SPF value of 30+. However, higher SPF sun creams such as SPF 75+ don't offer that much greater protection to the skin.

How often should you apply?

Sun protection cream products last an average of 2 hours. So you should aim to reapply every 2 hours, however, if you are spending time in the water or notice your skin burning you should reapply more frequently.

What SPF is best suited to you?

Adults of all ages and skin tone should aim to use an SPF of at least 30+.

Children over 6 months old and all skin tones should also aim to use an SPF of at least 30+.

Babies under 6 months old should avoid using sun cream altogether as they are at greater risk of the side effects from the chemicals in the sun cream.
